# Downtime alerts in Slack, with the diagnosis attached

Most Slack alerts tell you something is down and leave you to find out what. Ours arrive already diagnosed: what was expected, what was actually detected, which probe locations confirmed it, and a link straight to the incident. No Slack app of ours to install and no OAuth — you create the webhook in your own workspace.

## Setting it up

Incoming webhook you create in your own workspace .

- 1 In Slack, open api.slack.com/apps → Incoming Webhooks → Add New Webhook to Workspace, and pick the channel.
- 2 Copy the webhook URL and paste it into Alerting → Channels & contacts → Add Channel → Slack.
- 3 Attach the contact groups it should serve, then send a test — it arrives in a couple of seconds.

## What the alert looks like in Slack

A colored message — red for critical, amber for warning, green for recovery — titled like `🔴 DOWN: API (prod)`, carrying the diagnosis, Expected vs Detected values, the target, severity, start time, the locations that confirmed it, and a link to the incident. Recoveries add how long the outage lasted.

## Specific to Slack

- No app to install in your workspace and no OAuth scopes to approve.
- Optional channel, bot name and emoji overrides for legacy custom-integration webhooks.
- Several incidents at once collapse into one summary message instead of flooding the channel.

## True of every channel

- Alerts fire on confirmed incidents, not on a single failed check, so one blip from one probe does not wake anyone.
- During a storm, several incidents inside the grouping window arrive as one summary rather than as twenty separate messages.
- Recovery closes the same thread it opened, with the outage duration attached.
- Every channel is on every plan, including the free one. There is no per-channel upsell.

## Questions people ask

Do I have to install a WatchFor app in Slack? No. Delivery uses an incoming webhook you create yourself, so nothing of ours is installed in your workspace and no OAuth scopes are granted. If you later remove the webhook, delivery stops — there is nothing else to revoke.

Can I send different monitors to different Slack channels? Yes. Create one channel per Slack webhook and attach different contact groups to each, then route alert rules to the group that should hear about them.

What happens when twenty things break at once? Incidents inside the grouping window arrive as a single summary message with one linked line per monitor, instead of twenty separate posts.
