# Push alerts to your phone without an account anywhere

ntfy is the least ceremonious way to get a push notification: install the app, pick a topic name, and anything that posts to that topic reaches your phone. No account, no bot token, no vendor in between — and if you would rather not trust a public server, point us at your own.

## Setting it up

A topic on ntfy.sh or on your own server .

- 1 Install the ntfy app on your phone or desktop and subscribe to a topic name only you know.
- 2 Add that topic in Alerting → Channels & contacts → Add Channel → ntfy, with your own server URL if you self-host.
- 3 Attach contact groups and send a test.

## Questions people ask

Is a public ntfy topic private? Only as private as the topic name. Anyone who knows it can subscribe, so pick something unguessable — or self-host ntfy and point the channel at your own server, which we support.

Does it cost anything? No. ntfy's public server is free and so is the channel on our side, including on our free plan.

Can I use my own ntfy server? Yes — set the server URL when adding the channel and nothing leaves your infrastructure except the request we make to it.
