# Certificate and domain expiry: two levels, reminder days and clearer alerts

An expiry alert arrived once, said "Degraded", and then went quiet until the certificate actually lapsed. Expiry rules now have a warning level and an optional critical level, and you can pick up to five reminder days, such as 14 and 3, when the open incident is sent again unless someone has acknowledged it. The alerts say what expires and when: "certificate expires in 29 days (on 2026-11-01)".

## What changed

- Two levels. The Certificate Expiry, SSL Certificate and Domain Expiry cards now have a Warning and a Critical threshold, each with its own switch. Warning gives you time to renew. Critical is off by default; switch it on when an expiry that close should count as an outage: the monitor shows Down, it counts as downtime and it pages on-call.

- Reminder days. Under the sliders, Remind me again at takes up to five days. When the days left reach one, the open incident's notification goes out again, once. Acknowledging the incident stops its reminders. A preview line lists every notice you will get, for example You'll hear at 30 days (warning) · 14 days (reminder) · 7 days (critical).

- Clearer wording. Expiry notifications and email subjects now read "🟡 Shop — certificate expires in 29 days" instead of a generic Degraded or Down, start with the expiry date, and reminders are marked as reminders. The incident page shows the date in its root cause and each reminder on its timeline.

## What did not change

Existing rules keep working exactly as before: one warning rule, no critical level and no reminders until you add them.

## How to use it

Open an SSL, domain, HTTP, API or MCP monitor, go to Alerting and expand the expiry card. Over the API, set config.expiryReminderDays (for example [14, 3] ). See [expiry levels and reminders](/docs/monitors/certificates#expiry-levels-and-reminders).
