# Pausing a monitor asks first when an incident is open, and resets its failure counters

A monitor paused while it was failing kept its failure count, so after a resume a single bad check could open an incident at once — and Pause closed the open incident without warning you. Pausing now clears the counters: after a resume a new incident needs the full confirmation threshold again, and the monitor shows Unknown until its next check lands. If an incident is open, Pause asks you to confirm and says the incident will be resolved and your channels told; Mute is the option that keeps it open and only silences notifications.

## What went wrong

Two things. A monitor paused in the middle of a failing streak kept its failure count, so after a resume a single bad check could open an incident at once instead of waiting for the usual confirmation. And Pause closed an open incident without saying it would.

## How it works now

- Pausing clears the counters. After a resume, a new incident needs the full confirmation threshold again, and the monitor shows Unknown until its next check arrives.

- Pause asks first when an incident is open. The dialog says the incident will be resolved and your channels told.

- Mute is the choice when you want quiet but the incident should stay open: notifications stop, while checks and incidents carry on.

## Example

Your API monitor opens an incident after 3 failed checks. It has failed twice when you pause it for a deploy. Before, the first failed check after resuming made it 3 and opened an incident straight away. Now the count starts again from zero, so one slow response while the new version warms up stays a blip.

The differences between pause, mute, acknowledge and maintenance are in [this table](/docs/alerting/resolving#acknowledge-resolve-mute-maintenance).
