# Official TypeScript SDK & CLI on npm

A REST API is only half the job if you still have to write the client yourself. npm install watchfor gives you a fully typed, zero-dependency client for the REST API (monitors, alert rules, incidents, maintenance windows, contacts) plus a terminal CLI: npx watchfor summary, incidents --status firing, checks <id> --failed. The types come straight from the OpenAPI spec, and retries are safe thanks to idempotency keys.

## Quick start

npm install watchfor

import { WatchFor } from "watchfor";

const wf = new WatchFor({ apiKey: process.env.WATCHFOR_API_KEY! });
const firing = await wf.incidents.list({ status: "firing" });

Every request and response is typed from the API's own specification, so your editor completes field names and flags a wrong monitor type before you run anything. Errors come back as WatchForError with the status, the error code and how long to wait when you hit a rate limit.

## The CLI

No code at all, just the terminal:

export WATCHFOR_API_KEY=wf_live_...
npx watchfor summary
npx watchfor incidents --status firing
npx watchfor checks <monitor-id> --failed

## An example

A deploy script in CI creates a monitor for each new environment. It passes an idempotency key with the create call, so when the CI job retries after a timeout, the environment still ends up with exactly one monitor.

See [SDKs & CLI](/docs/api#sdks--cli) and the package on [npm](https://www.npmjs.com/package/watchfor).

Since then: [Python](/changelog/2026-08-26-python-sdk) and [Ruby](/changelog/2026-08-28-ruby-sdk) versions with the same CLI.
