# Scheduled maintenance windows

Planned maintenance should not page your whole team or dent your uptime figures. Maintenance windows silence notifications and exclude the time from your uptime and SLA during planned work — one-time or recurring, for chosen monitors or whole tags — while checks keep running, so you still see if the maintenance broke something. Optionally announce the window on your status pages with the affected components, start, extend or complete it on the fly, or post an announcement-only notice for work on something you do not monitor.

One window silences alerts, keeps uptime honest and can announce the work.

## Why not just pause?

Pausing stops the checks, so you get no data and no idea whether your change worked. A maintenance window keeps checking and marks the time as planned work instead.

## What a window does

- No alerts from the chosen monitors through any channel while it runs.

- Neutral time : the period counts as neither up nor down in uptime and SLA figures, and reports say so plainly ("excludes 2h of scheduled maintenance").

- Checks keep running , and the monitor shows a Maintenance badge next to its real status, so a real outage is never hidden from you.

- Status-page notice , if you want one: Scheduled ahead of time, In progress when it starts and Completed when it ends, with the affected components listed.

## An example

Every Sunday at 03:00 your database restarts for patching. You create a weekly window for 30 minutes on the monitors tagged db . Nobody gets paged at 03:02, your monthly uptime stays honest, and a monitor you tag db next month is covered without editing the window. If the restart ever goes wrong, the chart shows it, and the window's end tells you it is still down.

## Running late or done early?

From the window's ⋯ menu you can start it now, extend it by 15 minutes, 30 minutes or an hour, or complete it early. For work on something you don't monitor, create a window with no monitors that only posts the notice.

Go to Alerting → Maintenance → New maintenance window . See [Maintenance windows](/docs/monitors/maintenance).
