# Free MCP Server Checker

A plain HTTP check can tell you an MCP endpoint answers, but not what an AI agent actually sees when it connects. Paste any MCP endpoint URL into the free checker and you get a protocol-level report in seconds: the initialize handshake, negotiated version, capabilities, phase timings and the complete tool inventory. No account needed.

One check shows what an agent sees when it connects.

## What the report shows

- Whether the initialize handshake worked, and the protocol version the server agreed to.

- The server's name, version and capabilities, such as tools, resources and prompts.

- How long the handshake and the tool listing took, and the total time.

- Every tool the server exposes, with its description.

The check runs from the monitoring location nearest to you and only reads. It never calls a tool, so it can't trigger anything on the server.

## When it helps

- Before you connect a server to Claude, Cursor or another client: see what tools it offers and what their descriptions say.

- After a deploy : confirm from outside your network that the handshake still works and the tool list is complete.

- When an agent says it has no tools : one check shows whether the server failed the handshake or answered with an empty list.

## Example

You add a documentation MCP server to your editor and the agent can't find anything. You paste https://mcp.example.com/mcp into the checker. The handshake passes, but the report shows zero tools, so the problem is on the server, not in your editor setup.

## Next step

To run this check on a schedule and get an alert when tools change, create an [MCP monitor](/changelog/2026-07-30-mcp-server-monitoring). Try the checker at [MCP Server Checker](/mcp-server-checker).
