# Test your notification channels

The worst time to discover a notification channel was misconfigured is during an outage. You can now send a test alert to any channel to confirm it is set up, and from a monitor's menu you can test its whole alerting flow at once, so you know the right people will be notified before anything actually breaks.

## Two kinds of test

- One channel : in the channel list, open a channel's ⋯ menu and choose Send test . The test goes out at once, and any member can send one.

- A monitor's whole flow : on a monitor's page, the ⋯ menu has Test notifications . It sends a synthetic alert through every channel that monitor would notify, then lists each channel with whether it accepted the message. No real incident is created.

There is a short pause between tests of the same channel: a minute on paid plans, five on the free plan.

## Example

You connect a new Slack channel for the payments team and attach it to their contact group. From the checkout monitor's menu you run Test notifications . Email passes, but Slack fails with a 404: a character went missing when the webhook URL was pasted. You fix it now, not during the next outage.

## Where to find it

Alerting → Channels & contacts for single channels, and the ⋯ menu on any monitor. See [Adding a channel](/docs/notifications#adding-a-channel) and [How routing works](/docs/notifications#how-routing-works).
