# Incidents close themselves when you pause a monitor or disable its rule

Pausing a monitor or switching off its rule used to leave the incident it raised sitting open, waiting for you to tidy up by hand. Now, when you pause a monitor, or disable or delete its alert rule, any open incident from that source resolves itself, and the channels that were alerted are told it is over.

## What closes an incident now

- Pausing a monitor resolves its open incidents.

- Disabling or deleting an alert rule resolves the incidents that rule opened.

- Deleting a monitor removes its incidents and history with it.

## Who hears about it

The channels that were alerted get a closing message with the reason ("monitor paused", "alerting rule disabled" or "alerting rule deleted") and who did it. The incident's timeline shows the same.

## What doesn't change

Resuming the monitor or turning the rule back on starts fresh. If the problem is still there, a new incident is confirmed and opened in the usual way, so pausing can't hide a real outage for long.

## Example

A staging monitor has been failing since Friday because the staging server was switched off on purpose. You pause the monitor. The open incident resolves, Slack is told it was closed because the monitor was paused, and your incident list no longer shows a fire that isn't one.

See [Resolve on source change](/docs/alerting/resolving#resolve-on-source-change).

Since then, pausing a monitor with an open incident asks you to confirm first, and [Mute](/docs/notifications#muting-a-monitor) quiets a monitor without closing anything.
