# Network path monitoring (MTR)

When a host is slow, the answer is often somewhere on the path to it, and by the time you run a traceroute the problem has moved. MTR monitors now trace the full route to your host on a schedule: per-hop health, a heatmap of how the path changed over time, and click-to-replay of any moment so you can see what the route looked like when it went wrong.

Click any cell of the path history to replay the route at that moment.

## What you get

- A path ladder : every hop on the route, with its latency and packet loss.

- Path history : a heatmap of the day in 15-minute cells, each colored by the worst run in that window. Click a cell to replay the route as it was then.

- A view per location , so one bad hop near one probe doesn't mislead you.

## Alerts

Destination Unreachable is on and critical. Destination Packet Loss , Destination RTT , Loss At Any Hop and Unresponsive Hops are optional. Traces can use ICMP, UDP or TCP.

## Example

Customers in one region say your app is slow in the evening, but the server graphs look fine. The heatmap shows red cells between 21:00 and 23:00. Replaying one of them shows loss starting at hop 7, inside your hosting provider's upstream network. You send them the replay instead of a hunch.

## Add one

Create a Network path (MTR) monitor with a host name or IP. See [Network path (MTR)](/docs/monitors/network#network-path-mtr).

Since then, MTR confirmation re-checks run every 2 minutes rather than every 30 seconds, because traces are slow, and a free [online traceroute](/traceroute-online) lets you try a trace first.
