# DNS monitoring with expected records

A DNS record that silently changes can take a site down while every other check stays green. DNS monitoring is now complete: query through custom resolvers, define the records you expect and get alerted when the answer differs, start from ready-made alert presets, and get root-cause analysis when a lookup fails.

The records that came back and how long the lookup took.

## What you can check

- Six record types : A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, NS and TXT.

- Which resolver to ask : the location's own, Cloudflare, Google, Quad9, OpenDNS, or any IP you give, such as your own authoritative server.

- The records you expect : one value per line, matched exactly, by "contains", by "none contains" or by a regular expression.

## Presets

Probe Status and DNS Lookup Time (a warning above 1000 ms) are on from the start. No Records Returned , DNS Errors and Expected DNS Records are one toggle away. When a lookup fails or the answer is wrong, the incident shows what was expected and what came back.

## Example

Your apex A record should be 203.0.113.10 . During a migration someone edits the zone and it now returns 198.51.100.7 . With Expected DNS Records on and the monitor asking your authoritative server, an incident opens within minutes, showing both addresses side by side, before most resolvers' caches have expired.

## Add one

Create a DNS monitor with the domain name. See [DNS](/docs/monitors/network#dns).

Since then, DNS monitors also check [SOA, SRV, PTR and CAA records](/changelog/2026-09-02-dns-record-types-and-api-spec).
