# Domain expiry monitoring

A domain that quietly expires takes everything behind it down, and the renewal reminder is easy to miss. You can now monitor domains with a dedicated overview, and each one gets an expiry alert created for you automatically, so a lapsed registration never takes you by surprise. Add a domain monitor like any other check.

The expiry rule comes with the monitor. Move the slider to change the warning time.

## What it watches

The days left until the registration expires, and the expiry date, read from the registry over RDAP, with WHOIS as a fallback for registries that don't offer RDAP.

## An alert you don't have to set up

A Domain Expiry rule is created for you: a warning when fewer than 30 days remain. Move the slider anywhere from 1 to 365 days, or make it critical.

## Example

The company card on your registrar account expired in spring, and the auto-renewal failed without anyone noticing. Thirty days before the domain lapses, a warning incident opens and your channels get it. You have a month to update the card instead of an afternoon of downtime.

## How to add one

Create a Domain monitor and enter the registrable domain only: example.com , not www.example.com . See [Domain expiry](/docs/monitors/certificates#domain-expiry).

Since then, the monitor also shows the registrar, name servers and status codes, opens its incident on the first check below your threshold, and stays Unknown instead of alerting when a registry publishes no expiry date.
