# Notification channels

One alert address for the whole team stops working the moment the team grows. You can now build and manage notification channels and route alerts to several contact groups at once. Duplicate channels are caught as you add them, and the built-in Email and SMS channels are protected so they cannot be removed by accident.

## How routing works

- A channel is a destination: an email address list, a Slack or Discord channel, or a webhook into your own tools.

- Each channel belongs to one or more contact groups , and each monitor notifies one or more groups. When an incident opens, every enabled channel in those groups gets it.

- Each channel has a severity filter, so a channel can take criticals only.

## Guard rails

- Two channels of the same type can't share a name, and a channel that duplicates an existing one is flagged as you add it.

- The built-in Email and SMS channels can't be deleted or renamed by accident. You can still switch them off or change their groups.

## Example

Your payment monitors notify a "Payments" group. Its channels are the #payments Slack channel, which takes everything, and a webhook into your paging tool, which takes criticals only. A slow checkout posts to Slack. A checkout that is down also pages whoever is on call.

Since then: [Telegram, Microsoft Teams, PagerDuty](/changelog/2026-07-31-pagerduty-notifications) and [eight more channel types](/changelog/2026-08-04-eight-new-notification-channels) arrived, shown in the screenshot. SMS was removed in July, and the built-in channels became a single default email channel that can't be deleted until another channel is the default.
